Why do some people experience smooth, seamless CN2 GIA connections while others experience severe buffering during peak hours? Two Worlds: The 163 Backbone and the CN2 Backbone

China Telecom operates two backbone networks: the 163 backbone (AS4134) serving the general public, and the CN2 backbone (AS4809) specifically designed for high-quality international transmission.

The 163 backbone carries the internet traffic of the vast majority of ordinary users nationwide. It's massive in scale and has wide coverage, but its problems are also obvioustoo many users, insufficient bandwidth. During peak hours (8:00 PM - 11:00 PM), international exits experience severe congestion, with packet loss rates potentially soaring to 5%-15%. CN2 (ChinaNet Next Carrying Network) was developed to solve these problems. It adopts an MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) architecture and introduces a QoS (Quality of Service) guarantee mechanism, enabling the classification and scheduling of different service flows according to priority. Simply put: 163 is a "public road," open to everyone, but congested during rush hour; CN2 is a "dedicated channel," with independent right-of-way and priority passage.

Within the CN2 "dedicated channel" system, there are two levels: CN2 GT and CN2 GIA.

CN2 GT vs CN2 GIA: Half-High-Speed ​​vs. Full-Dedicated Line

CN2 GT (Global Transit) can be understood as "half-high-speed." Its data packets access the CN2 leased line at the international exit segment, but switch back to the traditional 163 backbone network after entering mainland China. When tracing the route with traceroute, you will see IP addresses first appearing as CN2 nodes starting with 59.43, then switching to 163 nodes starting with 202.97. This is a typical example of "half-way optimization"the outbound segment is high-speed, but the return segment reverts to the congested "public road."

CN2 GIA (Global Internet Access) is the highest-level product in the CN2 product series. Its core feature is "direct connection to three networks, two-way 59.43." Both outbound and return routes use CN2 backbone nodes starting with 59.43, entering the AS4809 network from the provincial exit, completely bypassing the congested AS4134 (163 backbone network). It does not switch back to the 202.97 network segment throughout the entire process.

The performance difference between the two is particularly significant during high-load periods. Tests conducted from Hong Kong showed that CN2 GIA's round-trip latency was approximately 25-35 milliseconds, while CN2 GT's was approximately 45-70 milliseconds. From Los Angeles, USA, during the daytime, CN2 GT's ping value was around 155 milliseconds, and CN2 GIA's was around 140 milliseconds, with the difference not being significant. However, during peak evening hours (8:00 PM - 11:00 PM), the difference widened dramatically: CN2 GT latency surged to 180-250 milliseconds, while CN2 GIA remained stable at 145-160 milliseconds. Regarding packet loss rate, CN2 GIA kept it below 0.5% during peak evening hours, while CN2 GT reached as high as 5%-20%. A 3%-5% packet loss rate is enough to cause video conferencing stuttering, remote operation disconnections, and webpage loading timeouts.

This is the fundamental reason why it's "fast during the day, but laggy at night."

Why can CN2 GIA achieve "no congestion throughout"? Three core technologies:

First, MPLS label switching significantly reduces forwarding time. CN2 GIA's core network uses MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) technology. Traditional IP networks use "hop-by-hop forwarding"each router must look up its routing table to determine the next hop, which is time-consuming and error-prone. MPLS, on the other hand, uses labels for fast path matching. Data packets are tagged as soon as they enter the network, and core nodes only recognize the label for forwarding, completely eliminating the need for complex IP routing table lookups. This is like an ETC lane on a highwayno need to stop and pay tolls, just fast passage.

Second, Layer 3 QoS priority guarantees, prioritizing critical services. CN2 GIA introduces a carrier-grade QoS (Quality of Service) mechanism. The network classifies different service flows, allocating high-priority channels to critical services such as voice and financial data. This means that even when international egress bandwidth is tight, CN2 GIA's high-priority data packets can obtain dedicated forwarding channels and will not be squeezed out by ordinary traffic.

Third, physical isolation and independent routing completely bypass the 163 congestion section. CN2 GIA uses an independent autonomous system (AS4809) and the 59.43.x.x high-priority network segment, achieving hard isolation from China Telecom's traditional 163 backbone network (AS4134, 202.97.x.x) on physical links. Data packets enter the dedicated CN2 channel from the provincial exit point, bypassing the 163 network entirely. The routing hop count is typically controlled within 12-15 hops, one-third less than ordinary lines.

How to verify if you've purchased a genuine CN2 GIA?

There are many "fake CN2 GIA" traps on the market. Some low-priced plans only guarantee that the outbound journey uses CN2, while the return journey still falls back to the 163 backbone network. Traceroute can verify this: a genuine CN2 GIA will display IP ranges starting with 59.43 throughout the network exit and backbone network stages. If a 202.97 network segment appears, it indicates a GT line mixed with inferior nodes.

The verification method is simple:

After obtaining the test IP, execute the `traceroute` or `MTR` command during peak evening hours (8:00 PM - 11:00 PM). Observe the routing path: If it displays 59.43.x.x nodes throughout and does not show 202.97.x.xcongratulations, this is a genuine CN2 GIA. If it still displays 202.97 within domestic provincial segments, it is most likely a GT line.

There is another easily overlooked detail: "Single-line premium" is not the same as "triple-network premium". Pure single-line CN2 GIA mainly optimizes access for China Telecom users, with limited improvement for China Unicom and China Mobile users. A true triple-network CN2 GIA (or CN2 GIA-E) performs intelligent distribution in the data centerChina Telecom uses CN2 GIA, China Unicom uses AS9929, and China Mobile uses CMIN2.
